(A) INDO CANADIANS WHO GOT PRAVASI BHARTIYA SAMMAN IN INDIA

The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman (PBS) is the highest Indian award for Non-Resident Indian and Overseas Citizens of India or an organisation or institution established and run by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India  in conjunction with the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas to honour exceptional and meritorious contribution in their field/profession. The award is given by the President of India. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is organised since 2003 and is celebrated on 9th January since it was on  this  day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, led India’s freedom struggle.

PBD was annual from 2003 to 2014. From 2015,the format was changed to once in two years. Since 2016,the Government of India has doubled the number of awardees each year to 30 after a decision to grant the award once every two years.

(B) HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARDS BY GOVERNMENT OF INDIA TO INDIAN ORIGIN CANADIANS

Padma Awards, one of the highest Civilian Awards of India, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are given in various disciplines and activities. These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/April every year in New Delhi.

Out of 106 Padma Awards announced during 2023, Indian-origin Canadian Ms Sujatha Ramdorai got Padma Shri in the category of Science and Engineering.

(C) INDIAN ORIGIN CANADIANS HONOURED WITH CANADA'S CIVILIAN AWARDS

Three Indian-origin Canadians were bestowed with ‘The Order of Canada’, one of the country’s highest civilian awards (created in 1967) for their outstanding achievement and dedication to the country, helping in building a better nation and promoting a bilateral ties between Canada and India.

Internationally renowned scientist and innovator Dr Vaikuntam Iyer Lakshanmanan (from Mississauga, Ontario), real estate mogul Bob Singh Dhillon, also known as Navjeet Singh Dhillon (from Calgary, Alberta) and renowned paediatrician Dr Pradeep Merchant (from Greely, Ontario) were among the 135 individuals honoured with the prestigious award, as announced in December, 2021.
